The RAC have said that many drivers are not aware of the changes being made, are you aware? Do they affect you?
BBC news stated that a spokesperson from RAC has said “55% of drivers are unaware of the planned change.”
Motorists going abroad after 8 June 2015, are being warned about hiring cars abroad as they will need to take a special code with them to be able to hire one.
The code will include any convictions or offences such as speeding or fines. To obtain the code, they will have to access the DVLA website beforehand, but the code is only valid for 72 hours which means if you want to a hire a car three days into your trip, you will have to obtain a new code whilst you are abroad.
The DVLA are aware that not everyone has access to the internet, especially if you are abroad. Therefore they will offer a telephone number which will be made available for people who need to obtain this code.
The paper counterpart of UK driving licences is becoming computerised, the old style paper driving licenses that were issued before the photo driving license will still remain valid. However the DVLA has recommend destroying the counterparts of the driving license after 8th June 2015.
But some people, such as AA, are advising people to not destroy their counterpart document yet as some hire companies may be unaware of the new rules.
If you are not sure of what convictions you have against your license, you can log on to View My Driving License which is operated by the government website. To log on to the website you will need your driving license number, postcode and national insurance number.
So, if you are planning on hiring a car abroad this year, don’t forget to obtain your code online before you go!
