The latest studies from CIPD have found that employers who have skills gaps, are planning on hiring more apprentices and school leavers to reduce the gap.
In 2014 just 22% of employers were planning to hire apprentices, however in the most recent study, 33% of employers have stated they are going to fill vacancy gaps by hiring more apprentices.
It’s been found that by “investing in young people, for example through employing apprentices, is typically more cost-effective than trying to buy in skills and talent later” according to CIPD head of public policy, Ben Willmott.
He added that “retention rates are usually good for apprentices and businesses can quickly see a return on their training investment.”
“In addition many younger apprentices bring good digital skills, as well as fresh ideas and enthusiasm.”
At Loftus Stowe, so far we have had two apprentices and we don’t plan on stopping there!
We know (from experience) that by hiring apprentices, you can help shape them to suit your business, whilst giving them the opportunity to gain the experience they need whilst gaining qualifications they want and that the business needs.
Our apprentices have gone on to find passion in a sector they enjoy, which we are now enjoying supporting them through.
So, is this the start that young people need? “After a long, dark decade, the prospects for young people are finally looking brighter” according to Gerwyn Davies, labour market analyst for CIPD.
